Spay/Neuter Assistance Program
For many of the clients we serve, transportation and funding are barriers to receiving spay or neuter surgeries for their dogs and cats. These pets are often unaltered (not spayed or neutered) and may have had multiple litters in the past, or are at risk of reproducing in the future. New litters of puppies or kittens can add to the financial burden of families that are already having a difficult time keeping up with pet care. Additionally, unaltered pets are more likely to roam or express aggression while searching for mates. Getting pets spayed or neutered helps reduce these behaviors and reduces pet overpopulation.
To make spay/neuter accessible for our clients’ pets, we remove all barriers by scheduling, transporting, and funding the surgeries. If the pet has not received their annual vaccines, they will receive them at the time of the spay/neuter. A FIDO employee or volunteer contacts clients to schedule their pets for spay/neuter transport, and arrive on the day of the surgery in a FIDO cargo van to pick up the pets. Animals are placed into individual transport carriers on our van and delivered to our partner clinics for surgery. After surgery and recovery, our team picks up the animals in the van and returns them home.
Our Spay/Neuter Assistance Program has a near 95% success rate in ensuring that dogs and cats at high risk for accidental litters are spayed or neutered. Once spay/neuter is completed, we will continue serving the household through our pet food pantry, warehouse open hours for other basic pet supplies, and potentially fencing assistance for dogs in the home, if needed. Our clients are often appreciative of the assistance and relieved that no more litters are possible.
On average, FIDO ensures that over 1,300 animals are sterilized and vaccinated through our Spay/Neuter Assistance Program.
