Fence Program

The FIDO Fence Program provides large, secure, fenced enclosures as a humane alternative to dog tethering. In many homes in Indianapolis, dogs are kept tethered by a chain as the primary means of containment. Dogs are social animals who require interaction and exercise for their well-being.  However, chained dogs often suffer isolated and frustrated lives. These dogs are also more likely to escape and become stray, to bite, and to be surrendered or impounded into animal shelters.

We’re the only organization in Indianapolis to offer this service at a nominal fee for dog owners lacking resources. Prior to each fence build, FIDO ensures that all dogs in the home are spayed or neutered to prevent accidental litters and curb roaming behaviors.

Our enclosures are constructed using existing structures whenever possible, such as the sides of the client’s home and/or garage, to create the largest possible area, while keeping material expenses to a minimum. Our fence team often reinforces the fence around the bottom and top to prevent escapes from digging, chewing, and climbing. In addition, FIDO fences are constructed around an exterior door of the client’s home to facilitate bringing the dog inside the house to be part of the family. We ask a small fee for each fence project.

We often see immediate, positive changes in the dog’s behavior when they have a safe space to move around freely in the yard. Formerly tense and fearful dogs often become more relaxed, playful, and approachable when no longer chained. Often our fence projects allow multiple dogs in a home to run and play together.

On average, FIDO completes approximately 175 fence projects each year.
